Maximo Data Migration · Validation Gates

IBM Maximo data migration services

Asset, location, item, PM and work-history migration into IBM Maximo and Maximo Application Suite. Phased, with validation gates between stages and reconciliation sign-off before anyone commits to cutover.

Plan a Maximo data migration

Migration is where Maximo programmes quietly lose credibility

Configuration problems get found in UAT. Data problems get found six weeks after go-live, when a planner cannot locate an asset, a reliability report returns nonsense, or finance queries a work-order cost that does not reconcile. By then the programme has been declared a success and nobody has budget to fix it.

Valueztech treats data migration as a delivery phase with its own gates rather than as a task on cutover weekend. Migration runs in phases, each with validation before the next begins, and reconciliation is signed off by the business rather than by the migration team.

The other half of the job is deciding what not to migrate. Duplicate assets, malformed classifications and broken hierarchies survive a migration perfectly well if nobody stops them, and every extra year of work-order history increases validation scope and the environment you carry forward. Those calls belong in scoping, next to the customisation keep, refactor or retire decisions.

What a Maximo data migration covers

  • Asset and location hierarchy

The asset register and location hierarchy migrated with their relationships intact, because a hierarchy that arrives flat destroys rollup reporting and PM inheritance.

  • Item and storeroom master data

Items, storerooms and inventory balances, including the classification consistency that determines whether anyone can find a spare part afterwards.

  • PM schedules and job plans

Preventive maintenance schedules and job plans migrated so the maintenance calendar restarts correctly rather than firing everything at once in week one.

  • Organisation, labour and craft

Organisation structure, storerooms, labour and craft records migrated and validated, which is what makes work assignment and costing behave on day one.

  • Work-order history

Historical work orders migrated to the agreed depth, with reconciliation sign-off, so failure analysis and reliability reporting have something to work with.

  • Reconciliation and evidence

Source-to-target reconciliation reporting retained as programme evidence, which matters for regulated water, energy and government operators facing audit.

How Valueztech runs a Maximo data migration

01

Profile the source

Understand what is actually in the legacy system before agreeing what will move: duplicates, orphaned records, inconsistent classification and hierarchy breaks are found now, not during load.

02

Agree scope and depth

Decide which objects migrate, how many years of history come with them, and what gets archived or left behind. This is a business decision with a cost attached, so it is made explicitly.

03

Map and transform

Field-level mapping into the target Maximo data model, aligned with the organisations, sites and security design so migrated records land inside the right structures.

04

Load in phases with gates

Phased migration with a validation gate at each stage. A phase does not proceed until its predecessor reconciles, which keeps errors small and traceable.

05

Reconcile and sign off

Source-to-target reconciliation reviewed and signed off by the business. On upgrade programmes this covers asset, location, PM and work-order history from the 7.6 estate.

06

Prove behaviour, then cut over

Automated regression suites confirm the migrated data behaves correctly inside the configured application, then cutover runs with parallel running and a rollback position.

Data migration track record

  • Utility upgrade migration

Data migration from a Maximo 7.6 estate covering asset, location, PM and work-order history with reconciliation sign-off on a Victorian water utility programme.

  • Manufacturing upgrade validation

Organisation structure, storerooms, labour and craft migrations validated on a 7.6 to 8.9 upgrade supported for a major chocolate manufacturer.

  • End-to-end data services

Validation, replication, governance and Maximo-specific archival that keeps the production environment performant while preserving audit-trail access.

  • Master data partner

MRO and material master data cleansing, asset registry and hierarchy build delivered with a specialist master data management partner where scale demands it.

Maximo data migration FAQs

Common questions about migrating asset, item, PM and work-history data into IBM Maximo and MAS 9.

What does Maximo data migration involve?
Migrating asset, location, item, preventive maintenance and work-order history from a legacy system or an earlier Maximo version into the target Maximo environment. Valueztech runs it as a phased migration with validation gates at each stage and reconciliation sign-off before cutover, rather than as a single bulk load on go-live weekend.
What data gets migrated into Maximo?
Typically the asset register and location hierarchy, item and storeroom master data, preventive maintenance schedules and job plans, organisation structure, labour and craft records, and work-order history. On one recent programme the migration covered 7.6 asset, location, PM and work-order history with reconciliation sign-off, and organisation structure, storerooms, labour and craft migrations validated separately.
How much work-order history should we migrate?
Only as much as you will genuinely use. History drives failure analysis and reliability reporting, so it has real value, but every additional year increases migration effort, validation scope and the size of the environment you carry forward. The decision belongs in scoping, alongside the customisation keep, refactor or retire calls.
How do you validate migrated Maximo data?
With validation gates between phases and reconciliation reporting that compares source and target counts and values, signed off by the business rather than by the migration team alone. Automated regression suites then confirm that the migrated data behaves correctly inside the configured application.
Can you clean up asset data as part of the migration?
Data quality work is part of the conversation, since duplicate assets, malformed classifications and broken hierarchies survive a migration perfectly well if nobody stops them. Valueztech provides end-to-end data services including validation, replication, governance and Maximo-specific archival, and works with a master data management partner for large-scale MRO and material master cleansing.
Is data migration included in a Maximo upgrade?
Yes. On a Maximo 7.6 to MAS 9 programme, phased data migration with validation gates is one of the delivery phases, alongside rebuilding ERP, GIS and field-system integrations for MAS REST and OSLC patterns.
